Twenty-eight paintings, twenty-eight encounters. These exhibition stories are imagined.

An imagined story

Under the Pale Surface

At first the eye is difficult to find. The white rises around it in ridges, like a landscape after a long night of weather. You lean closer, and the painting seems to look back before you are ready.

Nothing dramatic happens. No answer arrives. Only that grey centre, held among the pale marks, continues its patient work. You step away a little more slowly than you approached. Outside this small rectangle, the room has become surprisingly loud.

An imagined story

Almost Picking One

Her hand had already reached the flower when she changed her mind. The petals were a pale blue she could not imagine surviving the walk home. She left her fingers open beneath them, as if waiting for something to fall.

Did you choose one? somebody asked later. Almost, she said. For the rest of the day she could still feel the shape of that empty hand, and the slight, unexpected pleasure of having nothing to carry.

The Cup Between Us

You took your time, says the one with the blue cup. The other has no answer ready. All the way through the trees, he had been rehearsing something important; now, faced with an old friend and an ordinary question, he has forgotten every word.

The cup changes hands. Above them, the blue fruit stays stubbornly out of reach. Nobody mentions yesterday. For a little while, there is only this green clearing, and enough afternoon for two.

Something Left by the Window

By the time she found the note, the flowers had opened. Nothing urgent, it said. Call when you can. She read it twice, although there was very little to read, then set it beside the pale iris on the windowsill.

That was years ago. She no longer remembers what they talked about. What remains is the blue behind the petals, the yellow at their throats, and the small relief of knowing that someone could wait.

An imagined story

红花Still Wearing Red

She almost changed before leaving. The red felt too bright for the weather, too certain for the sort of day she was having. From the doorway, her sister said, Are you coming or not?

So she went as she was. Later, she would remember almost nothing about the occasion: a glass set down, somebody laughing in the next room. Only the colour stayed, vivid against the afternoon, as though a part of her had arrived before she was ready.

The Field We Crossed

In summer we used the trees to find our way home. In winter, with the leaves gone, we argued over which turning came next. You insisted on the white trunk. I remembered the blue one.

We were both wrong. We crossed the red field until our shoes were full of dust, and came out behind a house we had never seen. Its kitchen window was open. Someone was making dinner. Suddenly, being lost seemed a smaller thing.

An imagined story

Leaving Together

One bird lifts before the other. For a moment there is that awkward distance between leaving and following, the little space in which a decision can still change.

Then the second wing opens. Below them the afternoon is thick with gold, every mark of the brush holding some resistance, some weight of air. I used to think freedom would look effortless. Here it looks more like this: the work of rising, and someone rising beside you.

An imagined story

A Tree for Impossible Fruit

We planted it on a day when nothing else had worked. You said a tree ought to know what sort of fruit it intended to grow. I said we could ask it later.

Now there are blue circles on its white branches, and neither of us has a better explanation. We sit beneath it with an empty bowl. Every so often you look up, pretending to be impatient. I know you are pleased. You have stopped checking the time.

An imagined story

Before I Tell You

There is something I keep meaning to say. Each time you ask, I find a smaller thing instead: the weather, the window left open, whether you would like more tea.

Meanwhile the blue wings spread across my chest. They are far too large to hide, although I seem to have managed it until now. Perhaps you have noticed. Perhaps that is why you sit so patiently, leaving room between us for whatever might finally take flight.

On the Way to Somewhere

We were already late when you stopped beside the flowers. Just a second, you said, which was never a reliable measure of time when something yellow was growing nearby.

I waited with the keys in my hand. The leaves moved; one dark flower centre turned towards us. Eventually I put the keys away. I cannot remember where we were going that morning. I can still remember standing there, with nothing useful to do, while you looked.

The Room Behind Her

The music has stopped, but she has not turned around. Someone is gathering glasses in the next room. There is a chair for the dress, a hook for the coat, a perfectly ordinary evening waiting to resume.

For now, the blue folds hold her where she is. We cannot see her face, and perhaps that is a kindness. Not every moment needs an expression we can name. Sometimes a person is simply taking a little longer to leave.

You Called from the Shore

I had nearly put the camera away when you turned. Wait, I said, although I no longer knew whether I meant the photograph or the afternoon.

The sea refused to help. Another wave broke, the wind caught your hair, and the hat slipped lower in your hand. Nothing held still long enough to be kept properly. Yet this is how I remember you: already moving on, already looking back, leaving me that one brief chance to answer.

What Stayed

We chose the tree as our meeting place because it was impossible to miss. Even from the far end of the road, you could see the crown moving against the blue.

That day the wind made a mess of everything I wanted to say. You kept asking me to repeat myself. In the end we stood closer. Years later, the conversation is gone, but the tree is still there in my mind, leaning into weather it never expected to stop.

微笑

微笑Halfway Through the Joke

I missed the beginning of the joke. By the time I looked up, you were already laughing, red lipstick catching the light, your explanation becoming less intelligible with every attempt.

Tell it again, I said. You tried. It was not nearly as funny the second time. Still, something had happened to the room. I have forgotten the words entirely, but I remember wanting to stay at that table a little longer than I had planned.

Don't Move Yet

You said it was only the wind. I did not argue. There are moments when an explanation is something a person needs to keep, even if it does not quite cover what has happened.

Two clear drops catch the light beneath your eye. A strand of hair lies across your face. I reach to move it, then stop. You are looking at something just beyond me. For once, I let you finish looking before I ask.

At the Threshold

She has wrapped the scarf twice and left the ends uneven. Someone inside calls after her to take a warmer coat. She raises a hand without turning back; the door is already open.

There is a particular look people have just before they step into weather. A little defiance, a little calculation. The pale fabric gathers around her face, but her eyes are clear. Whatever waits outside will have to meet her as she is.

The Place He Lost

He keeps one finger on the page while he thinks. Beyond the window, the night has begun its slow rearrangement. The book is familiar; the sentence under his hand, somehow, is not.

When someone asks whether he is coming to bed, he says, In a minute. He has said this before. Light catches the strange small circles of his glasses. By the time he looks down again, he has lost his place, and does not seem to mind.

We Let Them Pass

The smaller animal stood between the others, nearly lost beneath their heavy bodies. We lowered our voices without anyone asking us to. It seemed the natural thing to do.

They took their time at the edge of the trees. A head turned; grass disappeared into a dark mouth. We had been talking all morning about the quickest route. Now the path was occupied, and none of us was in a hurry to have it back.

After the Last Guest

When the last guest had gone, she stayed in the dress. There were pins to remove, ribbons to loosen, a thousand small practical reasons to become ordinary again.

Instead she stood in the dim room, holding a fold of white fabric away from the floor. The crown still caught what little light remained. Tomorrow someone would ask how the evening had been. She would say it was lovely. This quieter part would belong to her alone.

Where It Touched

By the time we reached the water, whatever had fallen was gone. Only the rings remained, opening one inside another across the blue. You pointed to the centre as if it might still tell us something.

We watched until it became difficult to say which movement belonged to that first touch and which belonged to the water itself. Then you asked what I had wanted to talk about. I said I had forgotten. We both knew I had not.

An imagined story

On the Kitchen Shelf

The shell came home wrapped in a T-shirt. For months it sat beside the cups, looking slightly misplaced among things we used every day. Sometimes I moved it to dust, then put it back at the same angle.

You once asked whether I could hear the sea inside it. Mostly I could hear the refrigerator. But holding that cool curve against my ear, I remembered the walk back from the beach, and how neither of us had wanted to leave.

The Distance Left

From across the room, the pale forms seem to touch. Closer up, a little blue remains between them. It is hardly any distance at all, unless you are the one trying to cross it.

I think of the times a hand stopped just short of another hand. The pause before an apology. The chair pulled nearer, but not quite near enough. Here the whole painting waits inside that unfinished movement. You may stay as long as you need.

An Opening Without a House

There was no house around the opening. No path led to it, either. We stood on the rough ground and looked through the dark centre, each waiting for the other to say something sensible.

Perhaps it is enough to find an entrance, you said at last. I asked what we were meant to enter. You shrugged. The blue behind it seemed unchanged. Yet on the walk back, every familiar doorway looked a little less certain than before.

An Afternoon Off

Someone has left the watch on a branch. Below it, the street is empty, and the clock face has begun to lose the shape it was expected to keep.

I imagine its owner coming back, reaching up, then hesitating. There must be somewhere to go, something already late. But the light lies so generously across the ground. For a moment the hand stays lowered. The afternoon continues without being divided into anything smaller.

Please, Not Just Yet

Even with wings, there are afternoons when you would rather stay indoors. The book is open, the flowers are close enough to touch, and somebody elsewhere can surely manage for another page.

A sound comes from the doorway. The reader lifts a finger, asking for a moment without looking up. It is such a familiar gesture that the wings almost escape notice. Whatever the world requires can wait until the end of this sentence.

The Narrow Part

The path became narrow without warning. We stopped talking. Ahead of us, figures moved along the pale edge, their coats dark against the drop. Nobody seemed especially brave from where I stood.

Then the person in front turned and waited. No speech, no promise that it was safe. Just enough room left for me to catch up. I remember very little of the view. I remember the backs of those who slowed their steps for mine.

While the Kettle Boiled

I went outside to bring in a chair and found the pale green visitor resting on a leaf. From certain angles its wings almost disappeared. I shifted my weight, trying not to disturb the branch.

Inside, the kettle clicked off. The chair remained where it was. We shared a few minutes that neither of us had arranged. When I looked again, the wings were gone. All that remained was a leaf, and my unfinished reason for coming outside.

What I Could Still Recall

I tried to describe the face and found I could not. The mouth was uncertain, the outline changed each time I reached for it. Only the eye remained: grey, unhurried, with a small light held inside it.

Memory can be careless with the things we ask it to keep. Yet standing here, among these thick pale marks, I recognise something before I can name it. Not a whole person. The way it felt when that person looked at me.
